The Society for the Protection of German Immigrants was formed in Germany in 1842 by a group of German noblemen with both philanthropic and commercial goals for a settlement in Texas. Over 5,200 German immigrants arrived on the Texas coast between October 1845 and April 1846. Lack of adequate funding and planning, as well as the continued war between Texas and Mexico, left many immigrants stranded at Indianola without sufficient food, water, shelter, or transportation inland. Hundreds perished on the Texas coast, on the journey inland, and in cholera epidemics. Traveling by wagon, cart, and on foot, leaving behind much of what they had brought from their homeland, thousands made their way toward the land that was to be their new home. Through the courage, tenacity, and diligence of the German pioneers who survived, "Friedrichsburg" was founded. Today, Fredericksburg, the county seat, continues in the cooperative spirit of these determined German pioneers, honoring their traditions, heritage, and culture.

The Gillespie County Historical Society's Arcadia Book Committee reviewed thousands of photographs from its archives, many of which have been donated by descendants of the original settlers. German Pioneers of Texas was first published shortly after the 75th anniversary of the founding of Fredericksburg, Texas. In addition to relating memoirs of the early settlers, the book also gives an insight into the history of the community as it was viewed by one who recorded it in what is now almost the midpoint of its history. As such, it is, in effect, a bridge between yesterday and today. The first printing was in 1925 and then reprinted in 1983. The third reprinting was on the occasion of Fredericksburg's 150th anniversary, in 1996. Many stories have been written and books published about the German settlement of Fredericksburg. They all provide this pioneer German settlement with excellent documentation of events in its founding, its colonization, its hardships, as well as its days of glory that have come in abundance.

Paperback: 244 pages
Publisher: Eakin Press; Facsimile Edition edition (January 1, 1983)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 089015385X
ISBN-13: 978-0890153857
Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.5 x 8.5 inches
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0376/5298/7949/products/e15ccf1ced87b87fe71becc19608dd4f.png?v=1586997026
history-of-german-settlements
History of German Settlements
by Rudolph Leopold Biesele. Unsatisfactory social, economic, and political conditions in Germany from the close of the Napoleonic period through the revolutionary periods of 1830 and 1848 stimulated immigration to Texas. This book portrays the interest of both German and non-German groups in German colonization in Texas from 1812 to 1840. The primary interest in founding these German settlements was generated by Friedrich Ernst, who wrote a glowing account of Texas and its advantages to a friend in Germany. The publication and wide circulation of this letter provided the impetus for the immigration fever. A second significant event was the founding of the "Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas," which offered support and advice as well as land to qualified persons desiring to immigrate to Texas. This account covers the actual founding and history of many German settlements and towns in Texas prior to the Civil War. It is the first and, despite its original publication in 1930, still is the only extensive study of this subject.

Paperback: 316 pages
Publisher: Eakin Press (June 1, 1998)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1571682368
ISBN-13: 978-1571682369
UNSPSC Code: 55101500
Product Dimensions: 6 x 0.7 x 9 inches
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0376/5298/7949/products/dd7f0126a838bef6262e63f04e47f6cc.png?v=1586996535
a-guide-to-historic-buildings-of-fredericksburg
A Guide to Historic Buildings of Fredericksburg

by Kenneth Hafertepe. This richly illustrated book tracks the evolution of Fredericksburg architecture and guides readers through the streets of this once-westernmost German settlement in America, pointing out the log, fachwerk, and stone buildings that housed the town’s full-time residents, its weekenders, and the businesses of the nineteenth century.

Abundant with details uncovered by Hafertepe in his research, including corrections to construction dates based on newly tapped records, this guide features those buildings visible to visitors from the public streets and sidewalks. Lacking adequate financial backing, he nevertheless led the settling of some five thousand people in a land that was largely occupied by Indians.

Irene Marschall King presents the full sweep of Meusebach's vigorous life: Meusebach as the young liberal in Germany, as the colonizer in the 1840s, as a Texas senator and, later, an observer of the Civil War, and as a Texan who devoted his later years to bringing the Texas soil to fruition—all set against a background of the immigration movement and frontier life.

"Freedom is not free; it is costly," Meusebach believed. In Texas he found for himself and others freedom worth the price he paid.

Rich in historic detail, King's story recounts the founding of Fredericksburg, the crippling effect of the Mexican War upon the mass of immigrants huddled in illness on the coast, the signing of the Indian Treaty, which opened to settlement over three million acres of land, and the final collapse of the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants. Also depicted is the colonists' influence on the land—the gardens and orchards of south-central Texas, the "Easter Fires" that blaze on the hills surrounding Fredericksburg, the mixture of German custom with American necessity that created a unique culture. Throughout the narrative Mrs. King presents a fascinating cast of characters: the noble Prince Solms, who tries to establish a German military outpost in Texas; Henry Fisher, who attempts by devious methods to control the colonists and their land and finally incites a mob which tries to hang Meusebach; Philip Cappes, a special commissioner and Meusebach's assistant, who plots through intriguing correspondence with Count Castell, the executive secretary in Germany, to overthrow Meusebach; and the colorful and courageous Indian fighter and Texas Ranger, Colonel Jack Hays.

Primarily, however, this is the story of a man who found strength in his family's motto, "Perseverance in Purpose," and gave of his energies to build Texas.

Paperback: 222 pages
Publisher: University of Texas Press (March 1, 1987)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0292740190
ISBN-13: 978-0292740198
UNSPSC Code: 55101500
Product Dimensions: 6 x 0.5 x 9 inches

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0376/5298/7949/products/edd61fc67dce5a97d1970491802ce3cb.jpg?v=1586310878
peach-tree-tea-room-cookbook
Peach Tree Tea Room Cookbook
The Peach Tree Tea Room Cookbook is the first book in the Peach Tree Collection.

After 49 years of serving delicious meals and desserts to locals and tourists alike, the Peach Tree Restaurant closed its doors on August 16th of this year. Cynthia’s family recipes can continue to bring delight to the friends and family members who gather at your table.

Delight those who sit at your table with recipes such as:

Cynthia's Chicken Salad

Herb Mayonnaise

Jalapeno Pimento Cheese

Chilled Avocado Soup

Collins Chocolate Cake

Monterey Quiche

The recipes have proven to be easy to follow, and the book is filled with personal notes and memories.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0376/5298/7949/products/caa6ca2d344d182013363c8db8cb00c8.png?v=1587003071
admiral-of-the-hills-chester-w-nimitz
Admiral of the Hills: Chester W. Sometimes called the "Wild Ram of Texas," Wight took his splinter group to frontier Texas, a destination to which Smith, before his murder, had considered moving his followers, who were increasingly unwelcome in the Midwest. He had instructed Wight to take a small band of church members from Wisconsin to establish a Texas colony that would prepare the ground for a mass migration of the membership. Having received these orders directly from Smith, Wight did not believe the former’s death changed their significance. If anything, he felt all the more responsible for fulfilling what he believed was a prophet’s intention.

Antagonism with Brigham Young and the other LDS apostles grew, and Wight refused to join with them or move to their new gathering place in Utah. Their social and religious practices shared many of the idiosyncracies of the larger Mormon sect, including polygamous marriages, temple rites, and economic cooperatives. Wight was a charismatic but authoritarian and increasingly odd figure, in part because of chemical addictions. Few of the settlers, however, were prepared for the harsh realities of the Texas frontier or for confrontation with the Comanche Indians. In his 1867 novel Friedrichsburg, Friedrich Armand Strubberg, a.k.a. Dr. Schubbert, interwove his personal story with a fictional romance to capture the flavor of Fredericksburg, Texas, during its founding years when he served as the first colonial director.

Now available in a contemporary translation, Friedrichsburg brings to life the little-known aspects of life among these determined but often ill-equipped settlers who sought to make the transition to a new home and community on the Texas frontier. Opening just as a peace treaty is being negotiated between the German newcomers and the Comanches, the novel describes the unlikely survival of these fledgling homesteads and provides evidence that support from the Delaware Indians, as well as the nearby Mormon community of Zodiac, was key to the Germans’ success. Along the way, Strubberg also depicts the laying of the cornerstone to the Vereins Kirche, the blazing of an important new road to Austin, exciting hunting scenes, and an admirable spirit of cultural cohesion and determined resilience. Kearney. In the 1840s an organization of German noblemen, the Mainzner Adelsverein, attempted to settle thousands of German emigrants on the Texas frontier. Nassau Plantation, located near modern-day Round Top, Texas, in northern Fayette County, was a significant part of this story. No one, however, has adequately documented the role of the slave plantation or given a convincing explanation of the Adelsverein from the German point of view.

James C. Kearney has studied a wealth of original source material (much of it in German) to illuminate the history of the plantation and the larger goals and motivation of the Adelsverein, both in Texas and in Germany. Moreover, this new study highlights the problematic relationship of German emigrants to slavery. Few today realize that the society’s original colonization plan included ownership and operation of slave plantations. Ironically, the German settlements the society later established became hotbeds of anti-slavery and anti-secessionist sentiment.

Responding to criticism in Germany, the society declared its colonies to be “slave free zones” in 1845. This act thrust the society front and center into the complicated political landscape of Texas prior to annexation. James A. Mayberry, among others, suspected an English-German conspiracy to flood the state with anti-slavery immigrants and delivered a fiery speech in the legislature denouncing the society.

In the 1850s the plantation became a magnet for German immigration into Fayette and Austin Counties. In this connection, Kearney explores the role and influence of Otto von Roeder, a largely neglected but important Texas-German. Another chapter deals with the odyssey of the extended von Rosenberg family, who settled on the plantation in 1850 and helped to elevate the nearby town of Round Top into a regional center of culture and education. Many members of the family subsequently rose to positions of leadership and influence in Texas.

Several notable personalities graced the plantation—Carl Prince of Solms-Braunfels, Johann Otto Freiherr von Meusebach, botanist F. As he confronts the obstacles of human flight, he is aided by his loyal brother, Johann. Leaving Germany for the freedom-loving republic of Texas, the brothers endure a treacherous ocean crossing before arriving in Galveston, Texas, in 1846. The harsh and rugged conditions of the Texas frontier force them to learn survival skills before inventor/teacher Jacob can explore his newly found dream of conquering human flight. From the Texas coastline encampment of Indianola to the settlements of Fredericksburg and Luckenbach, the brothers face the daunting task of building homes and schools while contending with the ever present danger of the Comanche Indians and roving outlaws. Penniger was the publisher of the Wochenblatt, the towns newspaper that likely began publishing as early as 1871. As a newspaper man, he knew there were no better sources than people who actually live the story giving their firsthand accounts. But as these pages reveal, from their first steps on to the first ships that brought them across the Atlantic to the coast of Texas, then inland to New Braunfels, and finally to the 10.000 acres that would become Fredericksburg, it was never a foregone conclusion they would succeed. But succeed they did, turning Fredericksburg into a thriving community where thousands live, and hundreds of thousands visit.

Penniger's book tells this story and turns our memories form casual to inspiring. Johnson took pride in his heritage and in the Texas Hill Country roots of his pioneer ancestors. He delighted in showing guests the ancestral settlement, and his birthplace, boyhood home, and the family treasure: the LBJ Ranch and the home that became known as the Texas White House. LBJ generously gifted these cherished assets to the people of the United States. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park holds more assets significant to an American president than any other U.S. presidential site. Visitors may stroll through the Johnson Settlement, stepping back in time to the 1860s, when President Johnson's ancestors helped settle Johnson City, which was named after James Polk Johnson, nephew to LBJ's grandfather. The Boyhood Home and Visitor Center are located close to the Johnson Settlement, and visitors can tour the reconstructed Birthplace and enjoy a scenic drive through the LBJ Ranch before touring the Texas White House. There was hardly a river, a creek, or a stream without one. The purpose of the gristmill was to grind wheat into flour and corn into meal. Prior to the water-powered gristmill, grinding was a tedious, time-consuming task that was usually performed by hand using some type of mortar and pestle. When a gristmill began operating in an area, settlers from near and far traveled to the mill to have their grain ground. The gathering of these settlers and farmers at the mill was the beginning of many settlements that grew into the Texas towns of today.
