Fredericksburg, Texas is considered the historical gem of Texas by many visitors. It was founded in 1846 by German immigrants who had been lured to Texas by glowing accounts in handbooks and advertisements.
Many lost their lives during the long sea voyage and overland trek. The survivors made fresh starts when able. They built homes and public buildings that were reminiscent of the fatherland but with a southwestern influence.
Preservationists today admire the descendants of the pioneers for the perpetuation of their heritage. Also acknowledged are the talents of two noted local historian, Ella Gold and Esther L. Mueller, whose essays are included in this booklet. With knowledge and sensibility the authors have reviewed the people and events in the founding of Fredericksburg.
This booklet has been compiled so visitors to Fredericksburg can relive a small portion of Texas history.
