by Ethel Hander Geue. This work is essentially a compilation of information gleaned from the passenger lists of ships that arrived at Galveston between the years 1847 and 1861. It is also the story of the German immigration to Texas during this formative period of Texas history.

From the PREFACE: The widespread interest shown in A NEW LAND BECKONED, German Immigration to Texas, 1844-1847, inspired the compilers, Chester W. and Ethel H. Geue, to continue research on German immigration to Texas.

The Verein zum Schutze deutscher Einwanderer nach Texas, Society for the Protection of German Immigrants to Texas, had brought 7,200 immigrants to Texas between 1844 and 1847 without fulfilling its promise to care for these settlers in a new land. What happened to these colonists who had survived hunger, disease, death? What did the future hold for them? What effect did reports of their plight have on further immigration to Texas?

Much remained to be told about this story. Newspapers in Germany were very critical of the Verein and its management of this large colonization project. German immigration to Texas did continue, however, abetted by conditions in Europe that caused many thousands to leave.

The research covered in the present study was limited to the years 1847, the demise of the Verein, through 1861, the beginning of the War between the North and the South in the United States. From German newspapers in Texas, microfilm records of passenger lists of ships that arrived at the port of Galveston, Texas, and from emigration lists in the Hamburg Archives, information was gathered about German immigrants to Texas from 1847 to 1861.

Since this is only a part of the history of the German settlers in Texas, it seemed pertinent to tell the story of those who had preceded them. Hence, a short history o German immigration is included from the time the first one set foot on Texas soil.
