Alwin H. Sorgel's Texas Writings translated from German originals and edited by W. M. Von-Maszewski. The 1992 publication of Alwin Sorgel's A Sojourn in Texas, 1846-1847 commemorates the sesquicentennial year of the foundation of the German Adelsverein that organized and later sent shiploads of emigrants to Texas. In a year to be marked by celebrations throughout the "German belt" of Texas, the German-Texan Heritage Society offers this volume as its contribution to the continuing appraisal of German migration to Texas. The Directors of the Society believe that this volume will also serve as an appropriate and lasting addition to the Society's publication series.
The resulting collection of Sorgel's letters and reports in this dual-language edition are brought together for the first time through the persistent efforts and diligent research of W. M. Von-Maszewski, who also meticulously translated the text into English. The publication of the volume may engender questions about the propriety of celebrating an enterprise that essentially failed, bringing misery and death to hundreds of German settlers expecting a new life in a new land. In addition, to celebrate the founding of the Adelsverein may distress others who believe the noblemen knew very well that their purpose was to form a profitable corporation to colonize a rich, primitive and politically unstable outland. Nevertheless, Sorgel's writings help us understand a period of time wrought with hardship, pain, suffering and exploitation.
